The Culprit - The Reward
The last few days has seen plenty of local farm burn-offs here in the Ballarat district that is leaving a lot of smoke and haze in the air. I thought you'd like to see this series showing the culprit up close, and then the rewards you get.

Other Worldly
As I mentioned in the previous post I had a very unique image to post from yesterdays adventures. Usually you have to go somewhere very exotic for something like this, I have seen similar images from Iceland or Alaskan river deltas...would you believe this view is right here in Ballarat? It's a view looking down on the holding pond at the Ballarat Gold Mine. One of the original reasons I wanted to get into aerial photography was to capture abstract, surreal images...I think this one fits the bill!

Lake Ending
I had three separate chances to go flying on Tuesday, ending with a pretty intense sunset at Lake Wendouree. The farm burn-offs out to the west combined with the calm weather created some interesting conditions. In the first image here the high cloud reflected in the lake added a nice touch, and that small bright spot in the upper right corner is the reflected moon!

Extraordinary - Amazing
I've got an extraordinary series of images to share from Monday evening. I headed north out of Ballarat, past Creswick to an old gold mine that has featured many times in the past. I was keen to capture some aerials of this extraordinary landscape, knowing that the late sun would create some lovely colours and shadows across the land. Whilst it's an amazing area to explore on foot, from the air it takes on a surreal aspect, making it hard to actually determine what you are looking at.
Towards the end of this session, I noticed the light was dropping and as I headed back to the car I was taken by the incredible intensity of the sunlight out to the west. This time of the year sees a lot of burn-offs on farms as they prepare the land for the next season, and this particular fire was placed nicely above Mt Beckworth. The sun sitting close to the horizon always increases in intensity, and with the dark plumes from the fire, the light was simply amazing. Right place, right time!

By The Light of the Silvery Silos
On the way out to Lake Burrumbeet on Sunday evening (that felt a lot earlier with the end of daylight saving!) the clouds were looking pretty good. However the sun quickly disappeared behind a huge bank of clouds on the horizon and the best I had to work with was the reflected light in the water from some loose clouds above the bank. Still, it gave me some lovely textures to work with. On the way home the dark brooding sky made a fantastic contrast with the silver of the Windermere silos, which seem to be reproducing - if you go back to previous images of these silos there were definitely fewer.

Down in the Gorge
On Saturday afternoon I did a hike that's been on my list for a long time - the Moorabool River Gorge. Downstream from my favourite waterfall, Granite Falls, it's always inaccessible when there is any water flowing and with the weather being grey and overcast I thought I'd take the opportunity to do it before the rain returns. It's not a particularly difficult or long hike and in fact its no where near as photogenic as this area is when the water is flowing. However I managed to find a few nice views, and this one is my favourite. And the rewards for my efforts were a bag full of blackberries!

Friday Extras
Here's another couple of images from Friday morning, quite a contrast from the previous post. The first one shows some of the pine plantations down around Lal Lal Reservoir just as the first light of the day hits the tips of the branches.
Later on as I was heading back to Ballarat I realised there was still a big bank of fog out west, so I continued on out to Lake Burrumbeet where I captured the second image here, just as the sun was trying its hardest to burn off the remain of a fantastic morning.
